vlc-3.0.6: VLSub fails to automatically download subtitles

I am using the vlcsub plugin that comes with vlc-3.0.6 on Linux and I see that it fails most of the times to download subtitles and save them automatically (for now I need to manually download them with the link it provides).

I think that it could be related with the file being usually compressed while plugin probably expecting an uncompressed file.

I see this error in the terminal when this happens:
