hdr10 4k stutters, then freezes on android (nokia 7.1 android 8.1)

When I played an HDR10 mp4 on android with vlc, it immediately starts sputtering and then freezes completely. Audio keeps playing correctly. I also tried an mkv file with the same result.

It was a 4k hdr10 video file. The android phone was a nokia 7.1 with android 8.1 I turned on "beelden overslaan" ("skip frames" in dutch)

I am in the (very slow) process of converting a hdr10 4k mkv file to 1080p, to see if that plays smoothly. I will post the result here after I am done testing.
