VLC for Android (VLC 3.0.13) doesn't see SD card on Chromebook 3

Would like to use VLC 3.0.13 to play media from SD card on Chromebook. However, it doesn't see the card or the video and music files I have on it. I have even tried the beta Chrome OS but no joy. I am thinking that no media player will see SD card contents on a Chromebook. The odd part is you can access an SD file through Chromebook's Files app and then open with VLC but you cannot access SD files through VLC.
