E-AC3 Dolby Digital Plus Audio
To the best of my knowledge this seems to be a bug, but it may in fact be an issue where VLC is more picky about an audio track than other software. I am able to playback the same audio on Windows Media Player, Kodi, and on a hardware player without issue.
For years, I have been trying to optimize my library with the best available codecs to balance storage requirements and audio/video quality. More recently, I have encoded some sources with E-AC3 (Dolby Digital Plus) in order to preserve 7.1 channel audio that would normally take up many gigabytes in other formats.
For some reason, when playing these files back on VLC, the audio stutters constantly in a steady pattern. This happens when playing the raw eac3 file, or when it is combined in a container like an .MKV.
The files are created with a Mac application called Dobly Media Encoder. I've tried every imaginable setting adjustment to see if I could produce a file that would play in VLC correctly, but I was not able to.
I am reporting this as a bug because it seems like one to me, but I am more than willing to work with anyone to provide test files, or any additional information and willing to concede that I have done something wrong while encoding the file.
