24 bit audio files being reported as 32 bits

VLC version 3.0.0 Vetinari (same issue on earlier versions). Desktop PC Windows version 8.1

Steps are open VLC and from VLC open a 24 bit / 44.1kHz AIFF audio file (codec PCM S24 BE), VLC plays it OK, then from Tools menu select Codec information and VLC reports "bits per sample 32", surely this should be 24 ? Other Media players report correctly at 24 bits. Applies to all 24 bit AIFF files I have checked.
