Your bug reporting guidelines say to attach full logs, but I can't seem to get them. I have tried going to Tools -> Preferences -> Show All, and setting the log file. If I choose Default, it logs nothing. If I choose Error, it logs the same two messages every time, referring to "No playlist loaded" and "Use vlc... to start without interface."
And the issue is that MKV files seem to be the bane of existence for VLC 3.0.
- If I double-click an MKV from the file manager, VLC will open and the immediately close.
- If I open VLC, and then drag an MKV file into the player, it immediately closes.
- If I open VLC and then open the playlist window (CTRL + L) and then just drag an MKV into the playlist, VLC immediately closes.
If you have more specific instructions on how to reliably generate logs with the pertinent info, I'd be happy to oblige. Same with any other system info that might be helpful.
I experienced the exact same behavior between these two systems, except that the windows version shows the "Oops VLC crashed, send message to developers?" prompt before the the main window shows.
On ubuntu, choosing a specific version is a bit more involved, and I don't build stuff from source much, and there seems to be a lot of back and forth online for how to install it on 17.10 correctly.
On Windows (my Surface Pro 2), I just went back to 2.2.8 64-bit, and everything works perfectly.
I haven't tried a different player on Windows (since the older VLC works great), but on Ubuntu, I tried going back to the default video player (Totem), and it's able to play MKV files with crashing.
Of course, I don't know anything about the VLC code, but I just wanted to suggest the chance that there is some fundamental regression regarding MKV playback, since I've seen what is essentially the same VLC issue creep into two totally disparate systems as soon as I started using 3.0.
Btw, your wiki is somewhat out of date, stating that latest version is 2.2.6.
