3.0.0: can't access file on password protected samba share; password not looked up in kwallet

Kubuntu 17.04 with VLC nightly build PPA 3.0.0git20171027+r72110+89ubuntu17.04.1

When I open a file on a password-protected samba share without specifying the password, VLC does not look up the password in KWallet to access the file.

If I open the file from Dolphin, double-clicking on it to open VLC, then the VLC main window opens and displays a yellow "loading" animation in the place where the timeline would be that never goes away. No progress is ever made.

if I open the file from the command line (vlc 'smb://gaston@living-room-pc/Users/Gaston/Desktop/Bravestarr - 02 - Memories.MP4'), VLC's main window opens and then then displays a "permission denied" error:

In #18982 (closed)#comment:2, I was given the impression that in this circumstance, VLC is supposed to look the password up in KWallet. It doesn't seem to be doing that.

I know the credentials are in KWallet because the credentials were auto-filled for me when I used Dolphin (via KIO) to connect to the share.
