Black screen when playing .avi files with TechSmith video encoding

When I open .avi files encoded with TechSmith (TSSC) video codec, I get black screen, i.e. no video shown. If I cycle through crop modes ("C" hotkey), eventually video appears and plays, but on returning back to the initial crop mode it freezes. This occurs every time, with different files of same kind.

There was a very similar issue here https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=138926&p=459307#p459307 , but it is fixed in 2.2.7 and 3.0.0 builds. This one that I report is not fixed there, so I was told it is a different issue.

Steps to reproduce the issue

  1. Get an .avi file with TechSmith (TSSC) encoded video track
  2. Open it with VLC
  3. See a black screen instead of a video
