Support HDR screens on macOS/iOS
See #17383 (closed) and #17692 (closed)
The previous work was reverted for 3.0, because of the issues mentionned in #17383 (closed) and also partly in #17692 (closed).
And improved with #17763 (closed) but not enough was done
So creating a new ticket for this for P3 displays

I've noticed videos played in VLC (3.0.6 and latest build) are very over-saturated on my MBP 2016 compared to other players. Is this just because of P3 or something else?

This should be done properly with a metal based video output.

Did I got this wrong: The VLC website states that 3.x supports HDR but in fact it does not on macOS until 4.x release? If so, can the website please be updated?
https://www.videolan.org/vlc/releases/3.0.0.html
There is also a post on Reddit, users asking themself it is a bug or not: https://www.reddit.com/r/VLC/comments/qhl3qa/how_to_play_10_bit_mkv_h265_file_in_hdr_on_2021/

VLC 3 plays HDR content tone-mapped to SDR. Both 3.x and 4.x for macOS currently do not support "native" HDR output on HDR screens.
1 Too bad the website advertises VLC 3 supports HDR when it does not and what a bummer VLC 4.x will not support HDR, too.
I tested on a Macbook M1 Pro and a HDR video actually looks like crap in VLC compared to playing the same with a HDR video player like Infuse.

I am not saying 4.x will not, it just does not at the current state of development.
Any news on that?
