VLC Crashing – related to visualizations needed to display SRT (lyrics) files

I’m using VLC for a number of classroom uses. One is to play an MP3 music file with an SRT of the lyrics using 2 to 4 lines of text in the SRT file per display. I am trying to get as near to a blank screen as possible but so far can only use the Goom and Visualizer Filter. Other visualizations crash the system if set under Tools | Preferences.
My intent was:
- to get a solid color background (or near it)
- to turn off word-wrapping
I was changing things in Tools | Preferences (more or less at random) and then VLC starting crashing so I reinstalled it and set the preferences back to the default. Then I played a song with no SRT file, which worked fine.
Under Tools | Preferences I did this (in order of appearance):
|| ||= verdict =|| || ||=Set visualizations to Goom, restarted VLC =||ok || || ||=Played a song with SRT file =||ok || || ||=Changed OSD subtitle position to left =||ok |||| ||=Changed default encoding to UTF-8 =||ok || || ||=Changed position to top-left =||ok |||| ||=Set visualizations to 3D OpenGL spectrum visualization, restarted VLC =||crashed || || ||=Set visualizations to Goom, restarted VLC & played a song with an SRT =||ok || || ||=Set visualizations to libProject M effect, restarted VLC =||crashed|| || ||=Set visualizations to Goom, restarted VLC & played a song with an SRT =||ok || ||
- *** = changes position of title, but not subtitles.
Using the Audio drop down menu in the main UI to select visualizations I set it to spectrometer. This changes the visualizations in real time (immediate effect), but does not save. Restarting VLC the visualization will revert to setting in Tools | Preferences set previously. The visualization that can be set from the main UI are not the same as those under Tools | Preferences.
Thanks for a great product.
