VLC 2.2.1 distortion when playing MP3

Using VLC, MP3 audio is massively distorted when played to speakers via Airport Express. A description might be 'Clipped and chopped'.

This is from a machine running OS 10.10.3, with audio sent to a current generation Airport Express. It happens with MP3s of all bitrates. Other applications eg Quicktime play MP3s successfully to the airport express. VLC audio to the machine's speakers or headphones is fine.
