Runtime Error on opening multiple files or "Set up associations"

If I try to open multiple files at the same time in VLC from Windows Explorer, I get a runtime error (see the attached picture). This also happens when I run something like this from Git Bash:

vlc.exe --started-from-file A.mp3 & vlc.exe --started-from-file B.mp3

Or when I click "Set up associations" in the preferences.
