VLC 2.2.0 32-bit crashes when clicking "Set up associations..." in preferences

Hi, I am running VLC 2.2.0 32-bit on Windows 8.1 64-bit but have also tried on windows 7 64-bit (on multiple computers). Everytime I click on "Set up associations..." in "Preferences" under the "Tools" Menu, VLC crashes with the following error: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusal way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.
