Audioscrobbler plugin is not executed

In vlc-3.0.0-git-20150208-2004 (win64) audioscrobbler is dysfunctional. I have set up the last.fm credentials and enabled audioscrobbling and when I play an MP3 track there is no mention of 'audioscrobbler' in the Messages window (Verbosity: 2). I have also captured the network traffic with Wireshark and did not see any traffic related to audioscrobbler.

When running VLC 2.1.5 using the same setup I can immediately see "audioscrobbler debug: Meta data registered" when the MP3 track is started and everything works (i.e. I can see the scrobbled track on last.fm). On my Debian (amd64) machine running the vlc 2.2.0~rc2-2 package audioscrobbler is also working fine.
