VLC freezing when rotating iPhone during playback

I'm running IOS 12.1 (16B92) / VLC 3.1.3 (316) on an iPhone XS Max.

Since IOS 12.1 was released I've noticed during playing any video:

when rotating the phone during playback, the screen freezes, but audio continues
it will either not resume when rotated to landscape, or, can take 1-2 mins to resume video playback
if I load VLC, and rotate the phone and THEN play a video in landscape, it runs as normal
if I load VLC, and rotate the phone and THEN play a video in portrait, it runs as normal

The problem only occurs when (or after, rather) the phone is being rotated. I have deleted and reinstalled VLC, no difference.
