Remote control through local network
Hi all,
TL;DR: It could be nice if you can control VLC remotely through local network. Which solution would be the best?
Use case:
Installed on an Android tablet, I use VLC in the car to let children watch movies durring long journeys. However, it is hard to reach commands to play/pause, seek, change volume, update playlist, etc. Using tethering/connection sharing on my phone, I can build a local network for my phone and the tablet. Then, it could be nice to control VLC through my phone.
Possible solutions:
So far, I thought of 3 different solutions to implement this features.
- Easiest one would be to support most UPnP commands. Then using an UPnP server/player, like BubbleUPnP, you can browse VLC library, play/pause/stop, seek in media and co.
- Another one would be to port part of the web interface from the main VLC project. Then, relying on already existing applications (like VLC Mobile Remote) you can control your VLC instance.
- Last would be to develop the feature internally allowing more control (like a complete screen mirroring) but it requires a lot of work!
Conclusion:
So, I have some knowledge in Android development and would be pleased to contribute. Before that, what would you think would be the better solution (for now and the future)? Is there any work in progress already started?
Kind, Alexis.
