Is AV1 Really Supported?

Having tested the sample AV1 videos here of which none is able to play on the latest VLC for Android on my Motorola Droid RAZR phone (the app crashes/disappears every time I select the downloaded videos). I'm wondering what the AV1 support listed in the NEWS/Changelogs mean. Could sample videos be provided for tests?
