Open URL via vlc:// URI scheme

Hello,

I'm trying to serve video files from my Raspberry Pi via HTTP. I also have a little web interface to list those videos on which I would like to add a "Play in VLC" button to automatically view them in VLC.

Is there any documentation regarding the vlc:// URI scheme? I've already tried vlc://http://raspberrypi/whatever.mp4 and vlc://http%3A%2F%2Fraspberrypi%2Fwhatever.mp4 but both just give me the error "The location ... can't be played."
