ttml subtitles not supported?

I'm trying to use ttml subtitles stored in a .xml file. However, it seems like I cannot pick xml files from the subtitles picker dialog. Renaming the file to .txt also did not work. Are ttml subtitles even supported by the VLC Android app? Is there a comprehensive list for subtitle formats supported by the Android app? I could only find a list for the desktop version.
