Feature Request: Add "Sort by Track Number" in Folder/File Browser View

Feature Request: Add "Sort by Track Number" in Folder/File Browser View

Description

In VLC for Android, the folder/file browser currently allows sorting by filename, date, or length, but not by track number. However, many users store music in folders (e.g., for albums, audiobooks, or compilations) and expect to see tracks in album order based on the embedded track number metadata, not just filename order.

Expected Behavior

  • Users browsing music folders should be able to sort files by track number, using the track number tag in the audio file metadata.
  • This would match the "Sort by Track" functionality already available in the Albums/Tracks library view.

Actual Behavior

  • Folder/file browser view does not offer a "sort by track number" option.
  • Users must either use the library view or rename files to include track numbers in the filename for correct order.

Use Case

  • Users who organize music, audiobooks, or other audio content in folders and want playback in album or intended sequence without renaming files.

Proposed Solution

  • Add a "Sort by Track Number" option to the sorting menu in folder/file browser view.
  • Use embedded metadata to determine track order when available.

References

  • No existing GitLab issue found for this feature as of June 2025.
  • Community discussions and user requests on Reddit and forums highlight this as a desired feature.

This addition would improve folder-based music management and align VLC Android with user expectations for audio playback order.
