Unlike other video player, there is no way to tell which is the last file or folder played in SMB share folder view. Other app will highlight the the entry in different color.

For example like nPlayer, when you view a video inside a folder in SMB share, it will highlight the last one you see. It will also highlight the last folder and whole path of folder you were in as well in the folder listing.
So, let say you stop watching a video and come back the next day, you can pretty much find exactly where you were at by just clicking on the highlighted folder and navigate back to the last viewed file. you don't even need to remember what the path is to get back into that particular file, the folder will be highlighted along the whole path, all you need to do is to navigate on the highlighted folders. So, let say the last viewed file is at h:\animation\2023\whatever title\S1\04.mp4 . The folder animation, 2023, whatever title, S1 will be highlighted in folder listing. And the file 04.mp4 will be highlighted in the file listing.
Moreover, the file listing that you see above, it can be sorted by name, extension, size, date in both file and folder listing. The sorting is a per folder setting so each folder can be sorted by different condition.
So, let say you stop watching a video and come back the next day, you can pretty much find exactly where you were at by just clicking on the highlighted folder and navigate back to the last viewed file.
To emulate that on VLC, you can long tap an history item (in the history screen) and use the folder icon to go to the folder.
One thing that can't be emulate is the last viewed file. Let say you are watching one video inside a folder half way. You stop the video goes back to listing and leave it there. When you now have time and want to watch again, you can't tell which file you were looking at in that listing. In VLC , you have two options
like what you said, long tap in history item to go back to the folder. but I have hard time to get the listing like you see here https://streamable.com/dub5x3
click directly on the last view file and continue.
option 2 works, but option 1 as you see I have some difficulty to load the folder.
I can't find last play queue option under 3 dots icon in the video tab. In fact, I tried not to add any video into the video media tab because VLC would not categorize correctly most of the time. It will lump different season of the same animation into one single category. I usually just leave that blank and navigate to the folder directly via SMB share.
It even have a section not only show the last viewed file, it has a history for last visit folders. If you happen to view different video from different folder in a massive list of folder, you can just click on that "recently visited" link to show a list of last view folders that you visited
I believe the IOS version should be more updated than the android version. The android version has no update since 2019 so I recently try to move to another video player with similar feature set. I believe nplayer has the most configurable options in setting among all the video player I have tested recently, the 2nd goes to Infuse for IOS and mx player pro for Android.
