VLC Android can't delete files on SD card

I cannot delete files on my Lenovo in VLC after I have watched them.

I get a message - You have to grant VLC write access to your SD card. I follow the link, the base folder, the SD card itself says that permission cannot be granted in the interest of privacy. I navigate the structure to the folder that I want to delete the files from and it accepts Use this Folder.

When I return to vlc it tries to delete it but cannot. I have also enabled permissions in the Apps section of android to allow read write, but this does not work either.
