VLC Android 2:1 aspect ratio always incorrect and video is stretched / without black bars

I am using VLC for Android on an Android TV-Box X98 mini with Amlogic S905W2 SoC. It works in general, but in some videos the aspect ratio is wrong and the image looks stretched. The aspect ratio button is unable to display the correct aspect ratio.

Expected behavior

The video file has a resolution of 1920x960px (2:1 ratio), also called Univisium (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Univisium), and on a 1920x1080p Full HD screen there should thus be small black bars at the top and bottom of the screen so that the aspect ratio is kept.

Actual behavior

The image is stretched. The aspect ratio button only shows a visible difference for 4:3 and center but all other modes don't do anything. It works on VLC on my PC, but not with VLC for Android. It works with other players e.g. KD Player on the Android Box which shows the correct aspect ratio with small black bars.

Steps to reproduce

Just play any 1920x960px (2:1) file which cannot be played back with the correct aspect ratio on VLC Android. It seems like the minimum width shown is just not the actual width of the video.
