can't play files from network share on chrome os

I'm trying to play files from a network share on chrome os using vlc and the file system for windows plugin: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/file-system-for-windows/mfhnnfciefdpolbelmfkpmhhmlkehbdf?utm_source=chrome-app-launcher-info-dialog

VLC says it's unable to play any files even though chrome's native player can play the files.
