Can't download subtitles / Can search but not download

I am using an ASUS Zenfone 5 with Android 9 and from some months now (can't precise exactly when it started) when I do a search for subtitles it do find them but nothing happens when I click to download it - no error messages, only the icon to wait is shown for a little while and then no sub is downloaded.

I was a beta tester and the version of my VLC was 3.2.6. Then I tried to get out from Beta and uinstalled it and tried many other versions of the VLC from the official site and it keeps like described above - nothing changes with the change in the version.

I also have tried it on an Amazon Fire tablet and it worked for the first time (I swear it worked once, I'm not crazy) and then the same problem occurs.
