ChromeOS: Embedded subititles in .mkv files do not display

Trying to play .mkv files with embedded subtitles results in video with no subtitles. One can clearly see the subtitles are available from the subtitle/audio button on the left of the play/pause button during playback but selecting a track does not result in them being displayed.
