Unable to play .rmvb files on Chrome or Firefox

VLC media player can play files with .rm and .rmvb file extensions, but a rmvb file must be renamed to rm before it can be played on Chrome or Firefox. VLC web plugin npvlc.dll contains the following entry for real media files: application/vnd.rn-realmedia Real Media File .rm
and the .rmvb extension should be added.

VLC 2.1.0 is installed on Windows 7 Ultimate.
